COMMUNITY NEWS

Student Spotlight
Craig Senior Alyssa Accepted to Rowan University:

We are proud to share that CHS Senior, Alyssa, who plans on possibly majoring in either Marketing or Exercise, has been accepted to Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.

Rowan was founded in 1923 and is one of New Jersey’s first public research universities with campuses located in various locations in Southern NJ (Glassboro, Stratford, and Camden).  RoU is home to approximately 20,000 students and offers 85 options for bachelor's degrees, 46 master's degrees, and six doctoral degrees.   Rowan recently founded the Center for Neurodiversity, one of the first in the nation, to provide programming, research, and community outreach services. The university’s Office of Accessibility Services assists LD students by providing academic coaching, tutoring, and registering for accommodations. The office is holding a virtual event called “College Prep Transition Night” on Wednesday, November 29th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Click here to sign up and learn more about Rowan’s accessibility services and the transition process.  Many congratulations to Alyssa and her family on this exciting news!

CHS College Tour Field Trip to St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC):

Craig High will be taking an all-school field trip on Tuesday, November 14th, and heading up to Sparkill, NY (about 30-40 minutes from Montville) to tour STAC (St. Thomas Aquinas College) which is a great local college option, especially for our Bergen County & Northern NJ families.

St. Thomas has many exciting majors from Art to Sports Management and an awesome LD comprehensive support program on campus called Pathways where students have a learning specialist that they meet with weekly.

We will have a campus tour, visit the admissions office, join a Pathways Program info session, and then enjoy lunch in the student dining hall with the students of STAC! We will be doing a bit of college research ahead of our tour which will guide our students on the process of navigating college websites. This will also help initiate preliminary postsecondary planning conversations for many of our younger students.  It will be an amazing experience for all especially those that are visiting a college and taking a campus tour for the first time.

We are planning to leave Craig around 9 a.m. and should be returning to school before 2 p.m.  If you would like to meet us at St. Thomas and join our tour, please email Ms. Skerker and she will give you all the details you need to know.

Fall Afterschool Stepping Out-Hunger Games Ballad of the Songbird and Snakes MON Nov 20th:  Our students have been asking for this since the start of the school year so let's make it official.  On Monday, November 20th we will be making the afterschool trek down Route 10 East to the East Hanover AMC (https://www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/east-hanover/amc-east-hanover-12)  for our very own viewing of the new Hunger Games movie.

We will cover the costs of tickets and get our kids there.  Your job is to negotiate snack money with your teens and pick them up at about 7PM.  The movie starts at 4PM and it is 2 hours and 45 minutes so we are thinking 7PM pick-up makes sense.  Students can sign up starting this MON with Ms Knutsen.

Craig High Tie Tying Clinic 2023: With school picture day this past week,  the Craig High “Tie Tying Clinic” made its annual appearance.  Started back in 2013 when a large group of students asked the question “How do you tie a tie?”, we have been sharing our answer with our students ever since!  This year we had 7 students learn the art of the simple knot and as an extra bonus, they were allowed to choose one tie from Dr. Cap’s retired tie collection to add to their own.

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR

This week’s CHIL will cover the next two weeks and lead us into Thanksgiving Break.  And with that, we would like to share what we are thankful for.

We are thankful for our students, their directness, and their unique perspectives.  We are thankful for our teachers, their enduring patience, and their positive energy.  We are thankful for PACS and all of its support (PACS Membership 2023-2024) and community building (Back PACS Newsletter Nov-Dec).  And we are thankful to you, our parents, for your unwavering trust and collaborative partnership.  If our paths or emails don’t cross before Thanksgiving break, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a wonderful, family-filled Thanksgiving!

ATHLETICS

Badgers Wrap-Up Season at “Running with the Devils” 5K:  Run in Winston Prep Invitational Cross Country Race:  The Craig High XC Team wrapped up its 2023 season last weekend at the annual “Running with the Devils” 5K in West Orange.  The Badger Runners joined 600 runners from across NJ at South Mountain Reservation. The event was sponsored by RWJ Barnabas Health and the NJ Devils Hockey Team to raise money for healthcare workers.

The Badgers were led by a trio of freshmen, Julian, Max, and Miles.  Each ran an amazing time while battling the weather.  Their finishing times will be a strong starting point for next season!  Congrats to all of our XC runners this season for their comradery and encouragement for their teammates and a big thank you to Coach Jodi Crum for her leadership and guidance.  See you next season!
